E-Learning Courses Translation Case Study

Translation and localization of more than 20 courses (250,000+ words) into Chinese within 10 weeks.

Background

The client is the world's leading on-line e-learning software provider and one of the US largest safety courseware manufacturers. They were to provide a comprehensive training programme for one of their Fortune 500 clients and the programme was to be translated and localized into Simplified Chinese. Furthermore, the OSHA provisions mentioned in the courses needed to be replaced with Chinese regulations.

The Challenge

In this project, the timeframe was very aggressive and the text, after translation, needed to be put in PowerPoint presentations and flash slides, and then voiced. At the same time, the courses referred to a lot of EHS provisions, which needed to conform to the relevant Chinese regulations and laws after localization since the localized courses were targeted at Chinese customers. No incompliance was allowed. In this context, the client thought that it faced a great challenge and so selected TIMESTRANS for this project.

The Solution

TIMESTRANS firstly localized the UIs of the course, and, at the same time, extracted, translated and proofread the terminologies in the courses; then, professionals with EHS background were arranged for the translation using Trados and those terminologies to maintain the consistency. Upon completion of the translation, TIMESTRANS had professional proofreaders revise the translation. After that, EHS experts were hired to adapt the translated text to Chinese laws and regulations. The final version was then sent to the professional DTPer for DTP in PowerPoint, and a professional dubbing studio was employed for voiceover. Before delivery to the customer, the DTP and voiceover work was reviewed and tested. In the end, we delivered quality localization work.
